Among the ranks was private Albert Ruger Company E. 36 years of age, who was the artist who drew the Birdseye view of Camp Chase. Mustered out June 27, 1865. Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 23 February 1865 at the age of 36. Enlisted in Company E, on 22 March 1865. Mustered out on 27 June 1865 in Camp Chase, OH 1890 Veteran's Schedule Ohio, Summit, Akron Albert Ruger Private Co H 196 OVI Feb 27 1865 - June 28 1865, 4 months 1880 Ohio, Summit, Akron 534 West Market St. Albert Ruger age 50 Artist b. Prussia Charlotte S. age 45 wife b. England Pioneering panoramic map artist Albert Ruger died on November 12, 1899 in Akron, Ohio. Ruger was born in Prussia and emigrated to the United States where he initially worked as a stonemason. While serving with the Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War he began drawing landscapes. After the war, Ruger settled in Battle Creek, Michigan. In the late 1860s, Ruger joined forces with J.J. Stoner of Madison, Wisconsin to form Merchants Lithographing Company. Over the next three decades, Ruger produced maps of towns and cities in twenty-two states from New Hampshire to Minnesota and as far south as Alabama. Ruger formed Merchants Lithographing Company with a partner in the late 1860s, producing many of these popular maps. Aerial photographs and earth-orbiting satellite mapping techniques of today have made Ruger's panoramic map-making techniques somewhat outdated, but his panoramic maps can give us a glimpse into the past of America's towns and cities.
