Brett, William H. enlisted at age 18 Jan 30th 1865 Mustered out with Company 9/11/1865; William Howard Brett was born in 1846 in Braceville, Trumbull County, Ohio. His parents were briefly members of the Trumbull Phalanx, an idealistic community based on the social theories of Charles Fourier. The family moved to Warren, Ohio shortly after Brett's birth. In 1861, young "Will" Brett, then only fourteen and the youngest boy in Warren High School, was appointed school librarian. As a boy under draft age, Brett tried repeatedly to enlist in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was finally successful in 1864, when he was accepted as a drummer. Characteristically, he managed to get into the fighting immediately, and is listed in official records as a private in the 196th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI.). After the war, Brett studied at the University of Michigan. In 1884, after catching the eye of board member John G. White, who was looking for someone to inject life into the library, Brett joined the Cleveland Public Library as its Librarian (Director). Brett served as Librarian (Director) of the Cleveland Public Library from 1884 until 1918. His greatest achievement, instituted in 1890, was to allow patrons direct access to the library's bookshelves. Before this change, patrons requested books in writing, selecting from a printed catalog. The open-shelf plan greatly improved the usability and popularity of the library and boosted circulation. Brett also developed an extensive network of library branches, beginning with the West Side Branch in 1892. He was a staunch advocate of service to children, establishing a children's alcove in 1898. In 1903, he became the first dean of Western Reserve University Library School, which had evolved from his efforts to formalize training for librarians.
